BCA, SCDF CODE REQUIREMENTS – EXIT STAIRCASE

  • 27 Aug 2024

BCA & SCDF codes for staircases are designed to ensure safety, to protect people from injury, accessibility, and structural integrity. Here’s a summary of key aspects to consider during the design and construction stage in order to clear Registered Inspector (RI).

BCA Code E.2.2 A staircase must have:

  • Handrail to assist movement.
  • Landing to break a fall and provide a place for rest.
  • Sufficient width, tread and riser to avoid injury.
  • Sufficient headroom to avoid injury.
  • Barriers to prevent people from falling off the edge of any open side that has a drop of 1000mm or more.

TPS provides a total solution for Fire Systems design, authority submission, bidding, construction management, testing and commissioning, and obtaining SCDF Notice of Approval A fire exit staircase, also known as an emergency exit staircase or fire escape staircase, is a designated route within a building that provides a safe means of evacuation during emergencies, particularly in the event of a fire.

STAIR DIMENSIONS

Tread Depth: Typically, the tread depth should be at least 250 mm. This is the horizontal part where you step. 275mm, if the staircase is in any other building.
BCA E.3.4.1 The riser height of each riser (the vertical part between treads) should not be more than 175mm.
Stair Width: Minimum width for stairs is 1000mm.
BCA E.3.4.4. The risers and treads within each flight of stairs shall be of uniform height and size. Consistency is crucial for safety.

HANDRAILS

BCA E.3.6.1. A handrail shall be provided on at least one side of the flight of any staircase with more than 5 steps.
BCA E.3.6.2. The height of the handrail shall be 1000mm above the pitch line. The height of the handrail shall be measured from the pitch line.
BCA E.3.6.3. Handrails have a circular hollow section (CHS) 50mm in diameter.
Have a clear space between the handrail and all the wall surfaces as shown in Figure E.3.6.3 (a).
BCA E.3.6.5 Handrails should be continuous and extend at least 300mm beyond the top and bottom of the stairs.
BCA E.3.7.2 All steps must be fitted with nosing strips between 50mm and 75mm in width.

LANDING

BCA E.3.5.1 A landing shall be provided at every floor level and door opening.
BCA E.3.5.2 An intermediate landing shall be provided in between floor levels of not more than 18 risers.
BCA E.3.5.3 The clear width of any landing shall not be less than 1000mm.

HEADROOM

The headroom along a flight of staircase is measured vertically between the pitch line and any point directly above that limits the headroom.

GAP

CA H.3.4.4 For any flight of staircase.

The gap size between any two consecutive steps in a flight of staircases shall not be large enough as to permit the passage of a 150mm diameter spare in the case of industrial buildings.
The size of any triangular opening, gap or void formed around a tread, riser and bottom edge of the barrier at a staircase in any building other than an industrial building shall not be large enough as to permit the passage of a 150mm diameter sphere.

DETECTABLE WARNING STRIPS

Clause 4.11.3.1 Detectable warning surfaces must.

  • Be provided at the top, bott.

FIRE CODE 2023 CL 2.2.11

  • Provide at least two independent EXIT staircases from every storey of a building.

CODE COMPLIANCE

  • SCDF Fire Code 2023.
  • Workplace Safety and Health Act.
  • BCA Code.
  • NFPA/FM Global.

TPS offers civil & structural design services for gas plants that generate N2, Bulk H2,SiH4,NF3,NH3, HCL Cylinder Pack, Y Ton and Trailer multi-hazard storage Yards

Using a 30%, 60%, and 90% design process where you engage customers in your design process. TPS solicits bids in order to choose the builder via a competitive bidding process

TPS will handle JTC/URA/BCA/FSSD/NEA/NParks/LTA/PUB clearance and approval, finally obtaining TOP and CSC

Hazards: gas storage will pose additional risk to the building. TPS design will address NFPA, IBC, and IFC requirements and lower the risk to an ALARP level.
